Well, not a blog per se... but a simple place for me to share things. |
There's something about the extreme beauty and challenge of this course all rolled into one epic event that makes this an unmistakably attractive race to me.
From the Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra-Trail_du_Mont-Blanc):
The Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (also referred to as UTMB) is a mountain ultramarathon. It takes place once a year in the Alps, across France, Italy and Switzerland. The distance is approximately 166 km (~103mi), with a total elevation gain of around 9,400 m. Some believe that it is the most difficult foot race in Europe.
While the best trailers complete the loop in slightly more than 20 hours, most runners take 30 to 45 hours to reach the finish line.

Over the weekend I was hanging out with some Aussie friends who got a kick out of participating in current meme called "planking".
What is it? Well... here's a BBC article that tries to explain: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-13414527
Planking is a prank that involves lying face down in a public place, with photos posted on social networking sites. Why do it? According to the article, "Because it's utterly ridiculous. If you go on holiday, you take a photo of yourself in front of the Eiffel Tower or the Leaning Tower of Pisa. We thought it would be hilarious if you're not interested and lying down instead."
Here are a few shots of my friends planking in Gatlinburg, TN over the weekend:
Thanks all for your prayers. Nothing is more nerve racking than having to rush your child to the emergency room.
Nate was trying to walk between the island and dishwasher and tripped and fell head first into the corner of the island. He does this sort of thing a lot zoning initially wasn't that worried. But within seconds a MASSIVE welt started appearing and the screaming just got worse. So, everyone to the car!
Unfortunately, our ER is a 20-30 min drive away. Very unsettling!
As the doctors checked him out he was tracking just fine (following light and objects) and wasn't vomiting or showing signs of a fever. So, we are just giving Tylenol and a cold compress for a while b
Of course this would happen as we were trying to head out the door for Easter weekend. Oh well, bit of a late start.
I think part of the problem is that his equilibrium is way off and his ears are in so much pain from infections. Fortunately he is getting tubes put in on Tuesday.
Poor guy!
